Handmade & heartfelt miscarriage and baby loss keepsakes and gift ideas

After losing two babies through miscarriage in 2019 & 2020 I wanted a way to remember them, but just couldn’t find the ‘right’ thing. I looked at jewellery, flowers, keepsakes... searching for something that connected me somehow to the babies we had lost.

Then I realised that actually I could honour our babies in my own very special way with a personal illustration for them, by me. This is how my “Memory Jar illustrations” came into being.

“Wave of light 2020” watercolour illustration

A memorial illustration to remember our two babies we lost.

“This is my heart being pulled by the tide & crushed by the waves, these are my favourite things, my hopes & dreams, these are my bottled emotions and silent tears. These are my babies soaring and shining bright in the night sky.”

The art of my heart

I initially found it difficult to talk about my miscarriages openly; there is an archaic unspoken rule in pregnancy that we shouldn’t talk about our baby before we are at that landmark 12 weeks and we certainly shouldn’t be discussing the trauma of miscarriage. I didn’t know how to start a conversation about miscarriage and baby loss. I didn’t know who would want to listen. Thankfully, I discovered Baby Loss Awareness Week (BLAW) & channeled my emotions into my Memory Jar illustration; setting a personal goal to have it completed in time for BLAW 2020 and share my story hoping to help others going though miscarriage and baby loss.

You can read more about my miscarriage story here if you would like to.

Do you see those two stars above the clouds? Those are our two babies soaring high.

The sea is my grief; pulling at me like the tide, sweeping me away with it and then crashing down on me like waves.

You will find all of my favourite things here in this memory jar; swallows, sunrises and sunsets, whale sharks, the sea, the moon, forget-me-nots and all my hopes and dreams we would have wished for our babies futures.

Whilst this illustration is so very personal to us, I wanted to be able to share the opportunity for others to express their love and grief for someone whom they have lost & hopefully help to heal their loss a little.
