Eco-friendly Christmas decorations; my journey.

I’ve been on an exciting adventure of research, wonder and learning whilst creating my new eco-friendly Christmas decorations, and I wanted to share it with you - straight from The Most Curious Kat HQ! (That’s me by the way! I’m Kat - hello if you’re new around here!)

Are you wanting to be a little more eco-friendly this Christmas time?

Or are you starting out designing your own range of products which you would like be more sustainable too? Perhaps you would like to see the process behind my eco-friendly Christmas decorations? (Or maybe you’re just reading this because you’re my Mum or chum and I’ve told you to! Thanks Mum, haha!)

When I started to research this idea, I knew that wanted my decs to be eco-friendly, sustainable Christmas decorations.

I didn’t want to add to the vast numbers of plastic adorning trees this year. I wanted them to be unique, top quality and made here in the U.K. My detailed and delicate illustrations would require an exceptional printers to do justice to the fine features of my drawings, and so the search was on.

I found a fabulous company based here in London who UV laser print onto wood. The UV printing process cures fast, it’s high quality and durable. Perfect for Christmas decorations which we want to stand the test of time. There are far fewer emissions into the environment compared to other printing processes; which fits well with my desire for eco-friendly Christmas decorations.

I chose an ethically sourced maple wood for my eco-friendly Christmas decorations to be printed onto.

I hope you’ll agree that the final finish on my eco friendly Christmas decorations is a top quality crisp, sharp and colourful print which very much suits Flamina and Foxy’s decadent lifestyle some would say (!) and the maple wood smells divine too!

After the decorations arrive back with me from the printers I hand embellish them with biodegradable glitter and embroidery thread made of natural fibres and is therefore biodegradable too. I think that I have achieved my desire to produce eco friendly, sustainable Christmas Decorations, and I am striving to continue a considerate sustainable business with my packaging and production choices too.

My greetings card printers are supporters of The Woodland Trust project and use only carbon captured papers for the production of their greetings cards. (The Woodland Trust helped to develop a range of paper that helps businesses curb their carbon emissions by creating sustainable woodlands. They plant UK native trees which capture carbon over time, reducing the environmental impact of businesses, benefiting wildlife and society too.)

I would also like to make an eco pledge for my business next year too:

Not to include the option of plastic wraps on my cards; as whilst these are recyclable with your plastic bags at any large supermarket, I feel they aren’t necessary for my business and once my stock of these are depleted I will not be using them anymore.

So there you have it; a little background to my eco-friendly Christmas Decorations and how they have been produced. Come and check them out in my little shop of curiosities…
