Mother’s Day 2023: celebrating creative women pioneers and the BAFTA Mums

The Most Curious Kat, Katherine Jackman on the red carpet at the BAFTA's in 2023

You may have seen on my Instagram & Facebook accounts that I was so SO lucky to be invited to the BAFTA’s last weekend.

I was asked to be a judge on the panel of the EE Mini Movie Makers competition due to my link with the Film and TV Industry ( my other day job, and long term career pre illustrating / lockdown and perhaps a tale for another day! ), and this was EE’s “thank you” to me for taking part. WOW, that’s a pretty great thank you, huh?!

The evening was so magical and went by as if I was in a dream! My ‘pinch me’ moment was as I queued in the loo’s with great actresses admiring my dress (my dress? me? wait… what?!)!

I was so incredibly humbled by all of the acceptance speeches, and as we head towards Mother’s Day here in the UK it got me thinking about just how many winners wanted to thank their Mums and dedicate their BAFTA’s to them.

The Mum appreciation poured in with Charlie Mackesy thanking his Mum and sister, Barry Keoghan thanked his Mum, Charlotte Wells thanked her Mum and humorously added “…so this is for you [Mum], literally, because I overpacked” !

Tom and Ross (‘An Irish Goodbye’ - Best British Short Film) were so full of nervous excitement as they exclaimed "I think if we forgot to thank our mums then there mightn't be any tea on the table tomorrow night - so thank you mum."

Paul Rogers (‘Everything Everywhere all at once’ - Editing) said that “Editing is an art form that was pioneered by women, all my editing heroes are women, and all of the heroes in my life are women” and he went on to dedicate his BAFTA to his Wife, Mum, Grandmother, two sisters and step mother.

How proud must all those Mums and women feel?!

What an amazing and unique Mother’s Day present that is…

A BAFTA dedication! Wow.

I’m so proud when Estella or Oliver bring me home one of their characterful creations from school and exclaim “Mummy this is for you”… and it sits pride of place on the mantelpiece. Can you just imagine if that was a BAFTA?!

I’ll leave you with my highlight of the night which was when Charlie Mackesy won the BAFTA for ‘The Boy, The Mole, The fox and The Horse’. It’s just the most beautiful short animated film & book - do watch / read it if you haven’t already; it’s a heartwarming tale of friendship, courage and kindness with beautiful illustrations by Charlie x
